Adapt or die? The evolving role of devs in the Salesforce ecosystem

As someone who has lived within the world of Salesforce for more than a decade, I’ve witnessed a lot of change.

Sometimes, I feel a bit like David Attenborough observing the ecosystem as it evolves with technology and the world around us. It can be brutal at times — high demand roles from just five years ago may not be as relevant in today’s market, and in another five years time roles will exist that we haven’t even considered yet.

The bottom line? Change is inevitable, and there’s no better example of this happening right now with the evolving role of developers.

Here’s a run-down of what’s happening, and some key considerations to take into account if you’re a Salesforce dev looking to move with the times, or a business searching for maximum efficiency in your operations.

The rise of low-code environments

As businesses strive for efficiency and innovation, the role of devs is undergoing a profound transformation, marked by a significant shift towards low-code environments.

It appears this evolution isn’t just a trend either — it’s a strategic move geared towards building platforms with reduced reliance on custom code, with products like Omnistudio leading the charge.

Traditionally, Salesforce devs were synonymous with lines of intricate code. However, the rise of low-code environments is reshaping this narrative. These platforms empower developers to create robust solutions without delving too deep into customised coding, while allowing for greater flexibility and agility in creating applications tailored to specific business needs.

The developer’s evolution

This transformation isn’t just about adapting to a new set of tools either, it’s a fundamental shift in terms of how developers ply their trade with the focus now on usability and configuration.

This also challenges the misconception that the move towards low-code is solely a cost-cutting measure. The reality is that developers are becoming more adept at creating solutions that are not just functional but also user-friendly, enhancing the overall UX for the benefit of customers.

Mitigating risks with low-code

Another advantage of low-code environments is risk mitigation. By placing a stronger emphasis on usability, developers can significantly reduce the likelihood of errors and the problems caused with spaghetti code.

This is a game-changer in a field where a single coding mistake could lead to system-wide issues. Low-code not only accelerates the development process but also ensures a more stable and efficient outcome.

A major feature of the Salesforce ecosystem is its regular updates and new releases. So, with each new iteration, developers face the task of checking and adjusting their code every few months. This means it’s not just about adapting to low-code; it’s about staying ahead of the curve in a rapidly changing landscape.

How will this impact your career trajectory moving forward?

It’s all about evolution, not obsolescence.

Of course, while low-code environments are on the rise, it goes without saying that the role of the dev is far from obsolete. Just to be crystal clear, the demand for devs is not going anywhere — many organisations have to implement customised solutions as each business has their own platform.

In addition to this, combining soft skills with hard skills is just as important moving forward. Good devs are also good stakeholder managers and communicators, making for a more well-rounded offering.

Developers are also increasingly moving towards front-end development, mastering CSS, and diving into integration tasks. Additionally, the creation and management of APIs are emerging as key responsibilities, demonstrating that while the tools may change, the essence of development remains.
