What Makes Nick Tick? – Meet Our Newest Team Member

It’s been a productive start to the year at CalibrX.

An ever-expanding tech landscape means that recruiters are busier than ever as they place skilled candidates in dream roles and help companies adapt, grow, and change.

Naturally, all of this activity has ignited a hiring push within the recruitment industry itself, as agencies move to shore up resources in-house to meet increasing demand.

So, it was with a sense of both excitement and relief that we expanded our own workforce recently as we welcomed our newest (and second ever) CalibrX team member, Nick Green.

Nick is a problem solver, strategist, and a natural communicator with a deep practical understanding across all things tech. With his real world knowledge derived from the very industries we exist to service, he brings a wealth of business and recruitment experience to the table.

With all the tools needed to succeed as a recruiter, Nick’s ready to get stuck into tailoring specific solutions for all our customers’ needs. Get in touch today for a chat!

But first, get to know Nick a little better.

Firstly, tell us a little bit about your background in sales and digital marketing:

My sales career started after an initial foray into the world of games programming. I started out doing phone based charity sales which, while tough, was also really rewarding. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was a great base to build up the resolve I would need to draw from in future roles that were to come.

From there, I moved through a number of sales roles, eventually ending up with Lenovo where I remained for a few years, honing my keen interest in IT and tech while also expanding on my SME selling skills. After Lenovo, I entered the recruitment industry with Opus, specialising in IT infrastructure around the Sydney region where I built a client base up from scratch.

Next, I decided it was time to start up my own digital marketing agency so I partnered up with a good friend of mine and we created TurboGrowth. Things went really well with the business, but we eventually moved on to pursue other interests, and I made my way back to recruitment.

Which of your skills from your past working life do you see as transferable to this role?

I feel my ability to naturally communicate and understand what a client or candidate is in need of is something that I’ve honed over the years. I also feel an empathetic approach to my work means less client churn, and happy, satisfied customers and candidates. Coupling this with my problem solving skills, I think it puts me in a good position to achieve the best results.

You’re big into IT and tech, how do you see the tech side of the recruitment industry developing in coming years?

It’s an interesting one. Things are moving so quickly in the tech world right now, so in the coming years I believe we’ll start to see a bigger focus on newer technologies like blockchain, A.I. and quantum computing.

These advancements will mean new jobs, but also some other roles, and even industries that exist today, will become redundant. As a recruitment agency we can only focus on moving forward and thinking of fresh ways to innovate and bring value to these developments.

From both a client perspective, what do you think businesses can do to attract and retain talent in a competitive market?

Since COVID, we’ve seen how fast the workplace can change, those who have been able to adapt have survived and flourished. But I think the days of the regular 9-5 office job are largely behind us, for some roles I appreciate that can help with productivity, but for the most part employers will need to offer flexibility. Accountability and responsibility for the employee will need to be key points as we move forward. It’s far cheaper to spend more quality time on working out ways to retain key talent than to hire new employees. So businesses will need to continuously come up with ways and incentives to keep their workers on board.

And from a talent perspective, what advice would you give to skilled recruits who are thinking of making a move to a new role in this environment?

If you are thinking of making a move, I’d say go for it! The current market is hot and there are so many great opportunities open right now. I’d also say if you have some spare time, focus on upskilling in an area you feel there might be a demand for in the coming years.

You’re big into Blockchain and web 3.0, what excites you about it?

So I’ve spent the last 2 years deep diving into Blockchain and Web3.0, and it’s grown into a huge passion of mine. I’m really interested in blockchain and cryptocurrency as we are constantly seeing innovation and new projects appearing to solve new problems. Given the current climate of the economy, and given the fact Bitcoin was essentially a product of the GFC in 2008, I see it shaping up to be an integral part of our financial system in the years to come.

Of course, like everything it isn’t without its risk and crypto as a whole is still in its infancy. A fair comparison is the beginning of the dot.com boom a large proportion of companies failed, and it’s the same cycle with blockchain right now. I guess time will tell which direction we go, but it’s becoming more and more clear that crypto is here to stay!

Finally, how do you like to spend your downtime?

I’m someone who has many creative pursuits and interests, so my downtime hobbies can vary depending on my mood. Currently, I’ve been spending my free time producing electronic music and, of course, trading cryptocurrency. I quite like to get down into the weeds of technical analysis and charting and also spend a great deal of time researching new projects to invest in. I like to keep active and enjoy running and going to the gym, I’ve also recently taken up spearfishing too!
