How to Nail the Interview (Without Selling Yourself Short)
Here’s something we remind candidates of all the time: an interview isn’t just about being impressive — it’s about gathering intel.
Because yes, you want to land the job. But you also want to walk into it with your eyes open. You’re not just there to perform. You’re interviewing them, too. It’s a bit of an old cliché, but it still holds water.
We’ve seen candidates blow us away with their technical skills, only to end up in a role where the culture was off, the scope crept wildly, or the manager wasn’t quite what they seemed. Most of the time, the warning signs were there — they just didn’t know what to look for.
So here’s your ‘official unofficial’ checklist for nailing your next interview — and spotting the red flags before you say yes.
You’re Interviewing Them Too
The power balance in interviews has shifted — and in tech, where great candidates are still in high demand, it’s perfectly fair (and smart) to treat the interview as a two-way street.
Don’t just wait for your turn to speak. Ask sharp questions. Observe carefully. This is your chance to find out what it’s really like to work there.
Interview Red Flags to Watch For
You don’t need to interrogate your future manager — but you do want to pay attention to the cues that something might be off. Here are some common red flags to watch for:
- Vagueness about the role or scope:
If they can’t clearly explain what success looks like, or where the role begins and ends, expect shifting goalposts. - They speak about the team, not with them:
A good interview process gives you the chance to meet potential peers. If that doesn’t happen, ask why. - The ‘we work hard, play hard’ trap:
Translation — long hours, blurred boundaries. Ask for examples of how they support work/life balance in practice, not just in policy. - Over-selling the opportunity:
It’s great to hear they’re excited about you — but if it feels like they’re trying too hard, it might be a sign of high turnover or a tough sell.
Great Questions to Ask
Flip the script and ask questions that help you get a real sense of the business, culture and expectations:
- What does success in this role look like after 6–12 months?
- How do you handle scope changes or shifting priorities in a delivery environment?
- What do high performers here tend to have in common?
- Can you tell me about someone who started in a similar role and how their career evolved?
- How does the team handle feedback — both giving and receiving?
- The answers will tell you just as much as the job description.
